Three Ways to Prepare and Protect Your Furniture During a Residential Move

Erik Stone

Moving house is an exhausting task, especially when dealing with bulky furniture. Furniture requires proper preparation to protect it from damage during a residential move. You must also determine how to move the bulky pieces from your old home to the moving truck and into your new home. Here are a few tips for preparing your furniture for the moving process:

Decide what pieces to disassemble

One essential hack for moving furniture is disassembling the pieces into smaller, manageable parts. However, not all furniture needs disassembly. Therefore, you need to create a list of all the pieces that can be taken apart. For example, dining chairs don't require disassembling—you can stack them instead. Take apart the bulkier pieces, such as beds, dressers, tables and couches. Doing this simplifies the move and saves space in the moving truck.

Invest in proper packaging

Furniture pieces can easily get damaged during a move. For example, the ends of your furniture may suffer scratches and dents as you move the pieces out of your home. Some items may even fall and break during the move. Protect your furniture by investing in adequate plastic sheeting and bubble wrap.

Use these protecting wraps to cover the furniture and protect it from dents, scratches and cracks. Remember to purchase ziplock bags too. These can be used to hold screws, bolts and other small pieces of furniture. Store the screws in labelled ziplock bags to avoid confusion and speed up reassembly.

Plan how to move the furniture to the truck

Moving furniture from the house to the truck is a crucial step in the preparation process for two reasons:

  • It determines the route to be taken from the home to the truck
  • It can affect the total moving costs

If you have large, oddly shaped pieces that cannot be disassembled, you must determine how to move them out of the house. If you live in an apartment building and cannot use the elevator or stairs, you may have to use the balcony. In this case, you will require lifting equipment to lower the furniture pieces to the ground. For such removals, the moving company may charge the following extra fees:

  • Inconvenient location fees: This is the cost of moving furniture from an inconvenient location, such as an apartment complex.
  • Long carry charge: This is the cost of moving items over a longer distance than usual.

Planning for the route from the house to the truck will simplify the process and prepare you for any additional charges.

Moving house doesn't have to be a nightmare. Hire a professional furniture removalist for a complete removal service.

Yo! Are you looking to store your things? If so, you will want to make sure that you get the best rates on self-storage. When I downsized my home after my kids left for college, I suddenly had a lot of stuff that I no longer had any room for. I set out looking for a storage unit to keep it all in, but I couldn't work out all of the options and extras which seemed to increase the cost. Thankfully, my friend Marian came with me. She is a real whizz who has been using self-storage for years. She made sure I got a great deal.
